MSc Applied Earth Sciences

The world population is growing and so is our need for clean forms of energy, such as geothermal heat, and critical raw materials for solar panels, electronic devices, and windmills. We need to understand how climate change and other processes impacts our environment, the earth & climate system, and thus our daily lives and those of future generations.

Do you aspire to be an engineer that helps move society toward a sustainable future? Then the Applied Earth Sciences (AES) MSc programme at TU Delft is the right programme for you.

What you will learn

➨ Engineering skills to help move society toward a sustainable future.

➨ To responsibly utilise Earth's finite natural resources to provide the growing world population clean energy and the critical raw materials necessary for solar panels, electronic devices, and windmills.

➨ To develop the technical tools needed to understand, monitor, model, and predict physical processes in the earth & climate system.

➨ To observe and model physical processes related to climate change effects, natural hazards, resource extraction, and subsurface storage.

➨ International study environment, combining theory and field study.

In my opinion, the most crucial skill set is the ability to comprehend the connection between technology and the physical world. This is what drew me to this field - we translate what we observe in the real world into technology to predict future events.

― Margot Ridderikhoff, Alumna Applied Earth Sciences

We are literally concerned with the most important issue of all: 'keeping the world liveable.' Providing everyone with enough energy and raw materials in a sustainable way. Combating CO2 emissions, solving climate problems, contributing to electrification. You not only learn something technical and know how things are put together, but you also really contribute something, you can achieve something. You're really doing something useful.

Volcanic rocks solving CO2 problems

What if we could capture CO2 from the atmosphere and permanently store it under the ground in the form of solid minerals? Applied Earth Sciences student Elara Redondo Garcia didn’t think twice when she had to opportunity to go to Iceland, where they are researching CO2 mineral trapping.

MSc Applied Earth Science Disciplines

The programme has been divided into 4 disciplines. During the programme you develop in-depth knowledge in one of these disciplines and get acquainted with the others . This will enable you to master new knowledge through your professional life, either in research or in engineering applications.
